I picked up a few books by A.J. Cronin last month.... and some of them turned out to be really good.
Saw this movie too, Giant and it was long... but nice. Elizabeth Taylor, looks the same when she is 20, 40, and 60.... slim and attractive, even after giving birth to three children. That's happily ever after for you.....
- The Keys of the Kingdom: This was a great read, loved the way he protrayed the faith and belief of a humble priest, Fr. Francis Chisolm. Fr. Chisolm is sent as a missionary to China, cause his way of thinking was unlike the other priests of his time. He was unconventional, he believed that God was the same... whatever name you use to call Him by. His attitude towards the protestant missionaries was rather nice too, he welcomed them instead of shunning their ways. I sent a copy of this book to my parish priest cause he seems to be facing the same kind of oppositions and obstacles any priest faces with a few parishners rooted in self righteous behaviour and a puffed up opinion of themselves.
- Adventures of a black bag: This was a pretty good book too, it's a collection of short stories in the life of a certain Dr. Finlay. (A.J.Cronin is a doctor by profession and he gave up his medical career to concentrate on his writing.) It was pretty cute the way Dr. Finlay falls for nurse Angus. The dedication and temperament of the good doctor was endearing. This one sentence in the book was so funny, it stuck with me, "As though his cup of wretchedness was not already overflowing, he had to deal with this little problem too."
- The Citadel: This is a story about a doctor who starts his career treating patients in a small mining village and then slowly moves to the big city of London in search of a better job. He ends up losing the very values he fought with his entire being, just to please a few high end folks. Very good book... liked the way the doctor gets swept away by the will to succeed and how he later pays for it terribly.
- Shannon's day: This was an okay book... nothing great. It was kinda dull at places, t'was about this young doctor who wanted to do his research more than anything else in the world, but something happened to him that hindered his progress, he happened to fall in love. Not worth reading.....
- Song of Six pence: This was so bad, I don't even remember what it's about.......

And the movie was not cheesy... that's why it was so good. Have you seen it shil? You wouldn't call 'Counterfeit Contessa' cheesy would you? Movie's like the 'Notebook' was chessy. It was written by that author, Nicholas Sparks...I gave you one of his books, now that story was downright sappy and cheesy.
